Being in India, we have the advantage of having some delicious masalas and spices at our disposal, which of course lend themselves perfectly to Indian food, but much to everyone’s surprise, many of these masalas and spices are also the perfect match for alcoholic beverages.

One such spice mix that pairs perfectly with a margarita is jal jeera powder. Yes, you heard that right. Jal jeera margaritas are where it’s at!

Tangy, spicy and refreshing with just a hint of sweetness, the flavour profile of a jal jeera margarita, while complex, is simultaneously sublime to the tastebuds.

Jal Jeera Cucumber Margarita

Ingredients

60ml Don Julio Blanco or Reposado
1 Indian green chilli or serrano pepper
1 cucumber
1/2 cup lime juice
6 tablespoons agave
1 heaped tablespoon of Jal Jeera powder
4 cups of ice

Instructions:

In a high speed blender, add cucumber, green chilli / serrano pepper, Don Julio tequila, lime juice, agave, and jal jeera powder. Blend until a smooth consistency is achieved. Add ice to the mixture and blend if you want a blended margarita (this will make the drink smooth and thick like a slushie). If you prefer your margarita on the rocks, add a few ice cubes to your margarita glass and pour the margarita mixture on top of the ice. Serve immediately. 

Pro tip: Add a salted rim to your margarita glass to really enhance the flavour of your margarita and add a complex layer to your drinking experience

Masala Jal Jeera Margarita

Ingredients

45 ml Don Julio Blanco / Reposado / 1942 tequila
15 ml triple sec
30 ml jaljeera syrup / concentrate 
30 ml fresh lime juice
Ice cubes
Chaat masala, for rimming (optional)
Lime wedges or slices, for garnish

Instructions

Pour the Don Julio tequila, triple sec, Jal Jeera concentrate/syrup, and fresh lime juice, into a cocktail shaker . Add ice cubes to the shaker, filling it about halfway. Shake the mixture vigorously till it’s chilled and thoroughly mixed. Add ice cubes to your cocktail glass and strain the margarita mixture into it. Garnish with a lime wedge or slice on the rim of the glass. Pro Tip: Rim your margarita glass with chaat masala for a truly unique twist on the traditional salt rim.
