Milkshake Or Cocktail? The Bushwacker Is A Bit Of Both

bushwaker cocktail

FOR those of you who like their drinks served with a side of (very important) history, let us talk about the storied cocktail, the Bushwacker. Not your neighbour's unruly hound, but the cocktail that’s been sneaking up on the unsuspecting since 1975, when bartender Angie Conigliaro worked her magic behind the bar. This creamy cocktail, named Bushwack much after, is like a milkshake for grown-ups who haven't forgotten the joy of licking the back of the spoon.

The Anatomy of a Bushwacker

Picture this: a blend of dark rum, coffee liqueur, dark creme de cacao, whole milk, and cream of coconut. It’s like someone took all the best parts of your favourite desserts, added a bit of island spirit, and decided it was a drink now.

Here’s the breakdown in ml:

60 ml dark rum (because we’re here for a good time)

30 ml coffee liqueur (Kahlúa, because coffee isn't just for mornings)

30 ml dark creme de cacao

60 ml of whole milk for that smooth feel that will bring all the boys to the bar

30 ml cream of coconut (Coco Lopez, to add a touch of the tropics)

The Mix-Up

Now, onto the fun part. You'll want to toss the dark rum, coffee liqueur, dark creme de cacao, whole milk, and cream of coconut into a blender with a cup of ice. Blend it up until it’s frothy, smooth, and promising nothing but good times.

Pour this liquid into a Hurricane glass, because if you’re going to have a cocktail that’s this much of a party, serve it in something that says, ‘I take my fun seriously.’

The Final Touch

Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg. It's not just for show; it adds a little spice to the sweetness and a bit of pzazz to your beach bum operations. It’s the muffler on the snowman, the cherry on the sundae—the small touch that shows you know what you are doing.

Why the Bushwacker?

In a world of cocktails that take themselves too seriously, the Bushwacker is a reminder to not be afraid to flip the script. Even though bars around the world will offer many variations of this fabled drink, each of them is a full-on beach party.

It’s versatile, too. Serve it up at your next barbecue and watch as your backyard transforms into the sandy shores of somewhere far, far away. Or whip it up after a long day, because who says you can’t find a little slice of paradise on a Tuesday evening?
