Try These Bollywood-Themed Cocktails For Your Next Movie Binge

bollywood cocktails - featured

On a scale of 1-10, how Bollywood crazy are you? If like us, you can’t go through your day without cross-referencing at least 10 dialogues from the ‘90s movie binge you engaged in over the weekend, then what we’re about to share next is just apt for you. We’ve given these classic cocktails a Bollywood makeover, and it increases their fun quotient by a power of 100. Prep these for your next watch party with your jigri dosts, and have a blast, guaranteed!

Khooni Mary

Wow your friends with this twist on the Bloody Mary, and watch them change their tune from “Yeh dosti…” to “Yeh haath mujhe de de Thakur!” when they realise you aren’t going to give up the secret ingredient that easily. We’re going to tell you the X Factor in this Bollywood-ised Blood Mary though — it’s garam masala.

To make the drink, fill a tall glass with ice cubes, pour 60 ml of vodka into it (we recommend Smirnoff Triple Distilled) along with 120 ml tomato juice, a dash or two of Tabasco sauce, a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, a pinch each of pepper and salt, about 10 ml of lime juice, and voila. At the final stage, sprinkle a generous pinch of garam masala over the drink. The Khooni Mary is ready to serve.

Rangeen Basanti

The Rainbow Paradise cocktail is known for its vibrant and colourful appearance, as its name rightly suggests. But its vibrant flavour and hues get a super-boost with our filmi twist: a spoonful of mango puree!

To make this drink, fill a shaker with ice and pour a measure each (15 ml) of Smirnoff Vodka, coconut rum, pineapple juice, and cranberry juice. Shake it like a dancing diva presenting some no-holds-barred thumkas. Then, pour into a tall glass and follow up with a measure each (15 ml) of melon liqueur, triple sec and blue curaçao. Finally, spoon the mango pulp on top. Go ahead and taste the rainbow.

Old Is Gold Fashioned

This one’s an ode to tall, stern and unbending patriarchs whose usoolein are as unwavering as their (hidden) pyaar for parivar. To make this drink, drop a sugar cube into a  rock glass, add a few dashes of your preferred bitters, and muddle. Now, add your Bollywood twist with a few crushed pods of cardamom. In go a few drops of water, and then, a peg of whisky. Some more ice, and an orange peel garnish finish this drink.

Barfi Punch

If you and your pals are suckers for meethe endings, this is the cocktail for you. In a tall glass, add a splash of rosewater, followed by condensed milk. Sprinkle elaichi powder on top, followed by crushed badaam and pista. All sweet so far? Here’s how we make it sinful — pour in 30 ml of Captain Morgan Dark Rum. Consume this just like health professionals say you should enjoy mithai — in moderation.

Jaagte Raho Espresso Martini

If you and your gang have lined up a movie marathon, this drink should be your go-to! It brings the Espresso Martini some desi flavour with the addition of crushed cinnamon. Here’s how you do it: brew fresh espresso or filter coffee. Add the cinnamon to the coffee to infuse it with its flavour. Once the brew has cooled, add it to a shaker and pour in a shot (30 ml) of Smirnoff Triple Distilled Vodka, a little coffee liqueur, and a splash of simple syrup. Give it a good shake, then add some ice cubes and shake some more. Strain it into a martini glass and enjoy (responsibly)!
