Method

The espresso martini cocktail is a great example of where mixology culture meets coffeehouse allure, when it was invented in the 1980s. Crafted with vodka, freshly brewed espresso and coffee liqueur, it is shaken vigorously to create a signature frothy crema and poured into a sleek martini cocktail glass. The drink remains popular for its polished appearance, layered flavour and the way it brings coffee and cocktails into a seamless interplay.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Vodka
    20ml
  • Freshly brewed espresso (cooled)
    30ml
  • Coffee liqueur
    10ml
  • Ice cubes
  • Coffee beans
    For garnish

Equipment

  • Martini glass
  • Jigger
  • Cocktail shaker

Method

Step 1

Fill a shaker with ice and add the vodka, coffee liqueur and chilled espresso.

Step 2

Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds, until cooled and foamy.

Step 3

Strain into a chilled martini cocktail glass.

Step 4

Garnish with three coffee beans for aroma and presentation.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Shake vigorously for 15 seconds to completely emulsify the espresso oils, resulting in a silky, creamy top layer when served.

  • Strain over a fine mesh screen to eliminate any bigger ice shards or crema bubbles, yielding a cleaner, smoother presentation.

FAQs

Whisky, coffee liqueurs and black rum complement coffee’s bitter characteristics with richness, sweetness and depth, resulting in balanced, flavourful drinks.

The espresso martini cocktail is moderately sweet, combining the deep bitterness of coffee with the smoothness of vodka and a touch of sweetness from coffee liqueur or simple syrup.
