Using coconut shells to make drinkware is an innovative way to reduce waste while providing a sustainable and durable substitute for disposable cups. When prepped the right way and treated with care, coconut shells are resistant to wear and tear. Cleaning, moulding and reinforcing the shell to avoid leakage allows it to hold hot or cold drinks without compromising on presentation.
Select a mature coconut with a sturdy shell, crack it open with a handsaw or a tough knife and discard the water.
Scoop out the flesh of the coconut with a knife or spoon, scrub well with warm water and a brush to get rid of any residual bits.
Smooth the sharp edges and buff the outside surface with sandpaper (medium to fine grit) as this eliminates splinters and provides a sleek appearance.
Apply coconut oil or food-grade beeswax to the exterior of the shell to provide extra durability and sheen before letting it dry thoroughly for utilising as a cup.
For stability, add a small wooden or bamboo ring at the bottom with food-safe glue, to make it easy for the cup to stand independently.
To increase the lifespan of the coconut cup, avoid soaking it in water; wipe it gently with a wet cloth and dry immediately.
