Made by infusing red wine with aromatic spices and fruits, mulled wine is a warm, spiced beverage traditionally enjoyed in the winters. Ideal to sip on cold evenings as well as in festive gatherings, the warm cocktail can also be batched for easy serving.
1 bottle red wine (750 ml) 30 ml brandy 2 cinnamon sticks 4 whole cloves 2 star anise 1 orange, sliced 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 lemon, sliced
Pour the red wine into a large pot along with the brandy, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise and orange slices. Stir occasionally over gentle heat.
Add brown sugar and combine until fully dissolved, allowing the mixture to heat for 10-15 minutes without bringing to a boil.
Once the wine is infused with the aroma of spices, remove from heat before letting it steep further for five minutes to infuse flavours.
Strain the mixture to discard the spices and fruit slices. Pour into serving glasses, garnish with lemon slices and sip when warm.
Garnish with extra citrus slices or a cinnamon stick for added flair.
For a richer flavour, let the mulled wine simmer on low heat for longer. Be careful not to let it boil, as this can cause the alcohol to evaporate. *Drink Responsibly. This communication is for audiences above the age of 25.
