India's Godawan Was Named The World's Best Single Malt; Here's What You Need To Know About It

Godawan Century, an artisanal Indian single malt, recently clinched the title of Single Malt Whisky of the Year at the 2024 London Spirits Competition. It’s a significant win, especially considering that for the longest time, Scottish and Irish single malts have held the spotlight. Now, with over 100 countries producing their own versions, the diversity of single malts available to us is incredible.

Godawan’s win, therefore, marks a new phase for Indian artisanal spirits, which have a burgeoning market across the globe. But before you get your hands on a bottle, here’s everything you need to know about this remarkable whisky that's redefining traditional norms:

Heritage Value

The name ‘Godawan’ is the local name for the Great Indian Bustard, a bird that's critically endangered and native to Rajasthan. So, this whisky does more than just please the palate; it raises awareness about and supports the conservation of a vital part of the state’s natural heritage.

Sustainable Sourcing

Godswan is distilled in Alwar, Rajasthan, and foregrounds local craftsmanship by using six-row barley grown in the same state, which is adapted to thrive in its dry conditions. This ensures a sustainable sourcing process.

Flavour Profiles

Godawan is available in two main versions: 'Rich & Rounded' and 'Fruit & Spice'. While 'Rich & Rounded' is for those who appreciate deeper, more mellow flavours, 'Fruit & Spice' is a great choice for a more fragrant and brighter profile.

Distillation

Ever wondered what gives Godawan its intriguing complexity? Well, it undergoes a slow-trickle distillation process and is matured in special casks where temperatures can reach up to 100°F. This unique local climate speeds up the ageing process, giving the whisky a depth and maturity that belies its years.

Botanicals

The casks that the whisky is aged in are carefully selected and previously soaked in local Indian botanicals. This results in a whisky carrying notes of raisin, fig, apricot, and a distinctive caramel sweetness, accompanied by a surprising hint of spice.

Conservation Efforts

Remember the Great Indian Bustard we talked about earlier? Each Godawan purchase supports conservation efforts for the endangered bird, making each bottle a part of a bigger purpose.

Versatility

Due to its versatility and robustness, Godawan pairs splendidly with rich, hearty dishes. Think laal maas, a traditional Rajasthani mutton curry known for its intensity, or maas ka soola, a succulent kebab recipe from the state made with mutton and raw papaya.

Beyond its interesting moniker, Godawan is a whisky that offers a unique experience in each of its variants, enough to stand toe-to-toe with the best single malts in the world.
