Dad Tries Craft: How I Introduced My Dad To The World Of Cocktails

Dad Tries Craft

It all started on a random weekend when I stumbled upon an old shaker collecting dust in the kitchen. I decided to give it a try, mixing flavours just for the sake of it. Little did I know! What began as a random little experiment soon turned into an obsession. Each new mix brought unique flavours, as if I were creating edible rainbow colours in a glass, selecting the glassware, experimenting with the ice, and uncovering hidden flavour combinations. Mixology quickly became my newly acquired hobby.

I thought mixology would be a new way to change things up for Father’s Day. It's imaginative and unique, and it's an activity we can share to spend quality time together. Let's skip the boring gifts and focus on creating memories while mixing up drinks over laughs and new signature flavours!

My dad is the type of person who loves exploring new taste preferences while staying true to simple and classic styles. Mixology as a hobby suits him wonderfully because it combines precision with flair, much like his unique style. He prefers hands-on activities and conversations, so making drinks together is a perfect fit. Additionally, it's an ideal way to connect beyond the typical TV or sports activities.

Crafting Drinks Or Solving Puzzles?

2

Making drinks isn’t just about mixing things in a glass. It’s like solving a fun puzzle with flavour, garnishes, and aesthetics with no right piece. One day, you're nailing a smooth pour, and the next, your shaker's leaking like a scene from a drama. It’s oddly gratifying, a bit stressful, and always keeps you guessing. You make a mistake, pick up on it quickly, and before you know it, you're exploring ice shapes and glass types! Crafting drinks is a process of learning from the setbacks and those “wow, I really did that” moments.

5 Drinks To That Made My Dad Look The Other Way

As I was putting together the menu for our activity, my dad was already in denial seeing the garnish, the colours and the aesthetics of drinks. I introduced these five colourful cocktails that were way beyond classic as part of our little bonding ritual.

Tequila Sunrise Cocktail For When Dad Breaks Away from the Classics

So, you know how dads tend to stick to what they’re familiar with, right? Just a classic pour, either a simple shake or on the rocks, nothing too fancy for a drink. But what about the tequila sunrise cocktail? It really opens up a whole new door. This drink has a fruity and citrusy taste, with a bit of tanginess, but it’s surprisingly mellow too. Crafting this drink is about how everything comes together in layers.

Seeing my dad carefully adjust everything, spoon at the perfect angle, was like watching him piece together a puzzle. He was sceptical at first but low-key impressed by how good it looked. “This doesn’t taste like it looks,” he said — and trust me, he meant that as a compliment. A total shift from his usual style!

Rainbow Martini Cocktail For When Pretty Colour Breaks All the Classic Rules

The rainbow martini cocktail is all about vibe, colour, and technique. My dad took one look and said, “That’s a lot.” But once we got into it, he was invested. Each layer has its flavour profile — usually sweet, sour, a little floral, and sometimes tropical — but what makes it crazy cool is how you pour it.

You need to know what is heavier and what will float. It is all about liquid density, which sounds complicated until you start doing it. The first time my dad got a layer right, he literally stood back like he just built something. “Looks like a science project,” he said, half proud and half shocked. I witnessed a melodramatic scene from Friends when Joey finally understood what the whole group meant.

Blue Lagoon Layered Cocktail That Changed My Dad’s Mind About Garnishes

The blue lagoon layered cocktail is my personal go-to, mostly because that electric blue colour is my favourite. Citrus-forward with lemon and orange notes, a little tropical, and just enough fizz to keep it crisp. My dad’s not usually one for colourful drinks and definitely not the garnish type. He thinks a slice of lime is “too much flair”. I really wanted to go all out for this drink, so I made sure to get the full setup — a citrus twist, some mint, and, of course, the right tall glass.

“It really works,” he said, looking totally serious. Now, I will know why my dad's Negroni cocktail will always have a lime going forward! The best part? He wanted to do it again. Garnishing everything!

Pink Lemonade Cocktail To Make Because Dads Deserve Pretty Drinks Too

Honestly, the pink lemonade cocktail is just the cutest thing ever. It's soft and citrusy, with a tang, sweetness, and surprisingly well-balanced notes. It's not just a drink that looks good. I created this for Father’s Day, keeping that exact vibe in mind. We mixed it up together, blending citrus with a touch of light syrup, shaking it gently, and letting that lovely blush pink come through. He raised an eyebrow at first, but after just one sip, he was totally on board. “It’s like summer, but even better,” he said. Hey, I got a bonus too! The pictures turned out really cute, and Dad didn’t even say anything about the pink!

Three-Layer Pineapple Espresso Rum Cocktail – Perfect For Dads Who Love Their Caffeine With Style

My dad really enjoys his coffee. He’s into bold, bitter, robust flavours — what he likes to call the “real stuff”. I thought for sure when I brought up the idea of a three-layer pineapple espresso rum cocktail, he would just say, ‘No way’. He was really curious, though. The coffee layer brings smoky elements, while the pineapple adds a tropical punch, and then there's that rum twist that just ties everything together perfectly.

It was pretty funny to see my dad concentrating on this drink, but honestly, it was also kind of impressive. The drink looked amazing, with its coffee base, golden middle, and frothy top. Ideal for the dad who believes that espresso speaks volumes!

In The End,

These drinks might not be traditional, but they sure are all about the method that definitely breaks away from the classic vibe.  These drinks are perfect for Father's Day, plus they look really great, too!  Oh, I just found out that the anonymous shaker sitting in my kitchen actually belonged to my dad. He used to be into crafting signature drinks way back in his prime.  Looks like an apple never falls far from the tree!
