How to Build the Perfect Whisky Tasting Experience at Home

By: Ananya Mukherjee

Perfect Whisky

Whisky is a carefully distilled spirit made from fermented grains such as barley, corn or rye, then aged in oak casks. Over time, it develops rich layers of malt, smoke, spice, caramel, and subtle earthy or fruity notes.

Organising a whisky-tasting event at home can cater to a significant understanding of several whisky varieties, especially for mixology beginners. Every whisky is unique, and a whisky tasting event gives you the know-how for each regarding their flavour, style, aroma and every minute details from smell and taste. To make the whisky tasting event better, every step, starting from choosing the equipment to the tasting event, is important.

Step-By-Step Guide To Serve Whisky At Home

Step #1. Props Needed

For a whisky tasting event at home, props like tasting sets and tasting cards are needed. Other essential props include the right and sufficient glassware, water glasses and jugs, and the right neutral foods to consume between different whiskies servings.

Step #2. Choosing The Whisky

Keep 3-5 different types of whisky for the event. The whisky categorisation can be done based on global origin (Scotland, Ireland, Japan, USA or Canada); based on the regions of Scotland (Islay, Speyside, the Highlands, the Lowlands, etc.); type of whisky, like, bourbon whisky or rye whisky; age, like 3-5-year old young whisky, 6 to 12 years old middle-aged whisky, or 15+ years.

Step #3. Selecting The Whisky Sequence

Serve 10-15 ml whisky to each guest in a single serving. Organise the tasting with ascending flavour. Keep the peated ones (smoky aroma and flavour) or the sweetest ones at the end. If these robust-flavoured ones were tasted before, then the subtler ones would get masked.

Step #4. The Ambiance

Select a comfortable location with a properly light up are for whisky tasting. Add some light music in the background; arrange bottles and glasses neatly; try simple table set-up with coasters or mats that match the theme of the event. Provide water and snacks to the guests before tasting whisky.

Step #5. Using The Ideal Glassware

Use tulip-shaped tapered glasses or Glencairn for a proper whisky tasting event. This will let the smell reach the nose, which is essential to understand the notes and finish of every whisky. If the whisky is poured into the glasses before the guests arrive, then cover the glasses with a sheet of paper. Provide a rinsing place to rinse off the used glass so that the taste of one whisky doesn’t mix with the next one.

Step #6. Food Pairing

Simple food items like nutmeg, chocolate, cinnamon quill, almonds, etc., are good to serve. Some neutral foods are- crackers and plain nuts, which can be served in between two whisky drinks. Other food pairings include blue cheese, smoked salmon, etc., with smoky whisky, soft cheese, apple slices, and dry fruits, which can be paired with fruity whisky.

Step #7. Final Step- Whisky Tasting

To organise a well-structured whisky tasting event, the proper direction is essential. Share the overview of the process, like the steps of the tasting method that focuses only on flavours and aromas to the guests. Also, guide them on how to focus only on the tastes while tasting any whisky from the list.

Step #8. The Surprise Note

To end the party, keeping a surprise whisky can make the event memorable. If your whisky tasting has focused on classic Scotch whiskies, then the surprise whisky could be one of Indian origin, like Godawan. Remove the label of a whisky bottle and ask the guests to understand the smell, finish, and other details of the whisky from a few sips and write the detailed flavour, aroma, and finish.

Whisky serving needs to be organised, ensuring the right glassware and temperature. A well-structured serving approach also maintains consistency as well as the taste.
