Single malt is essentially a whisky made from malted barley at a single distillery in pot stills. It is often aged for over three years in oak casks allowing its flavours to mature and develop finely such that the resulting spirit embodies very smooth and complex tasting notes. One such single malt that is prepared in the Indian deserts of Rajasthan is the Godawan Single Malt artisanal whisky.   

The six-row barley cultivated in the dunes of Rajasthan amidst scarce water supply, goes into making the Godawan single malt. Casks used to age the whisky are complete with Indian botanicals that infuse this drink with a regional touch. Two expressions of the Godawan emerge from this process, one a full-bodied rich and rounded spirit and the other which contains some fruity and spicy notes. Undoubtedly, both these Godawan variations can be served with a number of different desserts at a dinner party or formal gathering.

Dark Chocolate Truffles  

One of the most popular pairings with single malt whisky is dark chocolate truffles. This sweet treat is complete with robust bittersweet flavours which go well with the caramel-like intensity of a single malt. Pair dark chocolate truffles garnished with sliced strawberries with a 30 ml serve of the rich and rounded Godawan or a similar premium liquor so the spirit’s deep, pronounced flavours complement the slightly tart and chocolatey quality of the truffles.

Gulab Jamun  

An Indian dessert offering that is quite popular across the subcontinent, gulab jamun with its sweet simple syrup and the deep-fried round khoya balls is quite a luxurious treat befitting a 30 ml serve of a spirit like the Godawan or a similar single malt of choice. Garnish the gulab jamun with crushed nuts and saffron to lend them a more aesthetic touch. Gulab jamun would go well with the fruity and floral Godawan expression or of any other similar premium spirit of choice because some of its sweeter notes will blend suitably with the creamy, vanilla-like quality of the single malt.

Apple Crumble And Honey Nut Ice Cream  

Another classic dessert that often goes well with single malt whisky is an apple crumble. Made with the addition of fresh cinnamon, the crumble acquires a sweet and spicy quality that matches the deep, complex notes of a 30 ml serve of a single malt like the Godawan or any other premium single malt of choice. Add a scoop of honey nut ice cream on top of the apple crumble for a hot and cold dessert. The textural diversity of this sweet treat will pair well with the fruity notes of such quality whisky making them a suitable coupling at the end of a sumptuous dinner.

Shahi Tukda   

One of the more exquisite sweets prepared in Indian cuisine, the shahi tukda is made by soaking fried bread slices in rose and sugar syrup that is infused with different spices. It is then topped off with creamy thickened milk and crushed pistachios, almonds and rose petals. Such a grand dessert befits a 30 ml serve of the Godawan or any other premium full bodied single malt of choice because its sweet and spicy tasting notes are undercut by some of the tart notes in the whisky.

Gajar Halwa And Vanilla Ice Cream  

Another popular dessert often prepared as a sweet dish following a particularly festive meal, the gajar halwa in its more contemporary rendition is often served warm with a scoop of chilled vanilla ice cream. Pair this dessert with the robust flavour notes of a well-rounded 30 ml serve of Godawan single malt or any other premium single malt of choice so its sweet taste and creamy texture forms an interesting contrast with the bitter and complex taste of the deep, golden brown spirit.
