Starfruit And Spice Cocktails: 5 Pairings For A Sweet And Spicy Flavour Mix

Starfruit And Spice

In contemporary mixology cultures, different fruits are brought together with cocktail ingredients to create imaginative and inventive pairings that produce interesting flavour combinations. Carambola or starfruit is one such tropical ingredient that is increasingly being used by mixologists in the form of a garnish, a puree and even as fruit pieces chopped and muddled into drinks.

And of the versatile flavour combinations that are made possible because of the sweet and slightly tart notes of the starfruit, one is the blend of this ingredient with different spices. The crisp flavours of carambola coupled with the spice and aroma of elements like cardamom, peppers and cloves leads to a combination of contrasting tasting notes that build a lot of complexity into simple drink mixes.

Read on below to know more about some of the ways in which starfruits and spice cocktails come together for crafting a pairing of sweet and spicy flavours:

 1

Starfruit Ginger Mule

Prepare this coming together of the spicy and zingy flavours of fresh ginger with the sweet and crisp taste of the starfruit by bringing together the fruit’s juice with ginger shavings. Muddle them in a cocktail shaker with 30 ml Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka or any other premium vodka of choice. Upon transferring into a cocktail glass, top the drink off with 60 ml ginger beer for a fizzy touch and added gingery flavours. The sharply opposing notes of a crisp and spicy ginger and a crunchy and sweet starfruit produce a freshly imaginative combination that can be offered to guests at a summertime gathering.

 2

Spiced Starfruit Rum Punch

Rum punch is traditionally prepared with the addition of citrus fruits and spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. To this mix of spicy and earthy flavours and a lot of potent aromas, introduce a splash of starfruit juice that brings its own crisp tastes into the otherwise dense blend. Mix this rendition of the rum punch using 30 ml Captain Morgan Dark Rum or any other premium rum of choice and garnish it with a starfruit slice. Add 15 ml pineapple juice if required, to introduce more acidity in the drink.

 3

Starfruit Gin And Tonic With Cracked Pepper

A simple cocktail prepared using 30 ml Tanqueray No. 10 Gin or any other premium gin of choice, the classic G&T can be infused with cracked pepper or pepper powder for a spicy and savoury touch. Into this crip offering, infuse the sweet notes of starfruit in the form of a pulpy juice for an added textural finish. Pepper would sharpen the sweet and subtly sour notes of the starfruit and the addition of 90 ml tonic water will give the drink a light, bubbly touch which plays a role in bringing all these varied flavours together in a uniform blend.

 4

Starfruit Sidecar

Infusing starfruit in a sidecar can lend the earthy, spicy and caramelised cocktail a contrasting flavour note which will bring an elegant finish into the old-school drink. Prepare the sidecar by swapping the cognac with 30 ml Johnnie Walker Black Label or any other premium whisky of choice. Add to it 10 ml cinnamon syrup and 15 ml triple sec for an acidic and subtly bitter touch and finish the drink off with a garnish of starfruit chunks.

 5

Starfruit And Cardamom Sparkler

Use 30 ml Ketel One Premium Distilled Vodka or any other premium vodka of choice along with 30 ml prosecco or any other sparkling wine to craft this bubbly drink. The flavours of the carambola are brought forth better when it is blended with fizzy mixers whose effervescence makes these tasting notes more pronounced. Introduce cardamom syrup or crushed cardamom pods into the drink for a blend of sweet and aromatic components that lend much depth to the cocktail.
