If you’ve been around the world of food for the last few years, there’s no evading the supertrend that was bone broth. Hailed for its amazing health benefits as well as its rich taste, bone broth has become a staple on supermarket shelves and in kitchens the world over. Where once a slow-cooked stock was a secret only known to chefs, it’s now a hot commodity. But even though it’s now a mainstay of the kitchen, there are some ambitious bartenders who have brought bone broth into the world of mixology and created a new and reinvented world of drinks. The Stock-tails.

What Is A Stock Or Bone Broth Cocktail?

Bone broth cocktails are a unique and nutritious beverage option that combines the rich flavours of bone broth with a touch of creativity. These cocktails typically involve blending carefully crafted bone broth with complementary ingredients, such as herbs, spices, and sometimes a splash of alcohol. The result is a warming and savoury drink that not only provides the benefits of traditional bone broth, such as collagen and amino acids but also offers a distinctive and enjoyable sipping experience. This innovative twist on a classic beverage caters to those seeking both flavourful refreshments and the potential health advantages associated with bone broth consumption.

Tips To Create Stocktails

Experiment With Different Spirits

While vodka is a common base, you can use virtually any spirit for your cocktail creation. You also can use non-alcoholic spirits like Seedlip spice or herb varieties. You could even push the limits and include liqueurs to create original flavours, an orange liqueur with a chicken stock for an Orange Chicken Cocktail perhaps?

Go Heavy On The Herbs

Herbs and broths are natural allies, and they continue that relationship in stocktails. Use them much the same way you would in a soup, just enough to accent the broth, but not enough for it to become the main flavour. This could work well with botanical forward gins like Tanqueray No. Ten where the spirit is already naturally aligned to a herbaceous profile.

Change Up The Herbs And Spices

Chicken broth also gives you a great opportunity to stir in different levels of ground pepper, like cayenne, chipotle, or Aleppo pepper, which can be a wake-up call on a cold day. Indian spices, such as cardamom, turmeric, and finely ground fennel, are eminently drinkable. Nutmeg adds a holiday taste to chicken broth drinks, especially when combined with citrus like orange or lemon.

Types Of Stocktails To Try

Chicken Stock Toddy

In a nod to one of the most comforting soups, comes a comfort cocktail which begins with a base of chicken stock infused with aromatic herbs. The warm broth spiked with a judicious measure of whiskey or brandy, creates a harmonious blend of flavours. Garnished with a twist of citrus peel or a sprig of thyme it’s the perfect cure for the sniffles.

Mushroom Reduction Cocktail

A mushroom-infused elixir marries the umami depth of mushroom broth with the complexity of spirits. This cocktail involves simmering mushroom stock until it reaches a concentrated richness. To this reduction, a carefully chosen spirit, such as vodka or gin, is added, creating a cocktail that is earthy, yet refined.

Bull Shot

The classic Bull Shot is a daring cocktail that blends the heartiness of beef broth with the boldness of vodka. This cocktail is often seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and a hint of lemon juice to achieve a perfect balance of savoury and tangy notes.
