A Step-By-Step Guide To Making Candy-Infused Dark Rum At Home

a guide to infuse candy in dark rum

The market is filled with unlimited choices of flavoured liquors. You can buy any of those as a gift, but when you make one yourself, it makes the gift even more special. Infusing candy in spirits is one of the simplest techniques to create your own delicious concoction, and share it with your loved ones.

Here, we look at dark rum and candy and the delectable combination they make together! Dark rum can be infused with a variety of candies. You can choose mints, candy canes, gummy bears, toffee and even hard candies of different flavours. Also, it is extremely simple to infuse candy in dark rum: you can even do it with just two ingredients — candy and dark rum.

Tips For Making Candy-Infused Dark Rum

If this is your first time attempting candy infusion, go with a mid-tier dark rum, so, even if it doesn't turn out well in the first attempt, you will not feel the pinch. But don't opt for something altogether cheap.

Don't experiment with multiple flavours of candies. Stick with one flavour to get the optimum result.

Do not use plastic containers for infusing candies in dark rum. Use canning jars or mason jars.

Remember to sterilise your jars before using them.

Know your candies. Some candies absorb alcohol very well, others take longer for the same. For instance, gummy bears quickly soak up the alcohol while hard candies take time to get infused in the liquor.

The time taken by fruit candies varies. While Skittles get infused overnight, hard candy takes way longer to mix with the alcohol, but is ultimately worth the flavour it brings in.

Candy canes make for delicious infusions, but remember to crush them in a food processor.

Shake the jar before each use to get the full robust flavour of your infusion.

Method For Infusing Candy In Dark Rum

The process to infuse dark rum with candy is described below. There are variations too, depending on the candy and spirits you use.

First, take a canning jar or a mason jar. Put the candies in it. Pour the dark rum over the candies so that three quarters of the jar is filled with the spirit. Seal the jar and let the concoction sit for a while. The time period will vary depending on the amount and type of candies you use.

The time period could be two hours, overnight or even a couple of days.

To give you an idea of the process, here's an actual recipe for caramel hard candy-infused dark rum.
