Try At Home

The cosmopolitan cocktail has been a staple since its rise to fame in the 1990s. Known for its balance of vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice, and lime juice, the Cosmo is easy to prepare and serve. It’s versatile enough to inspire creative variations, adding new flavours to this classic drink.

The origins of the cosmopolitan cocktail have quite a few theories. It is said that a minimum of 3 people claim to have created this drink. Well, the most believed and popular theory is that Cheryl Cook, famous as the “Martini Queen of South Beach”, invented this drink during the 1980s. Cook was taken aback by the fact that a number of people ordered the classic Martini cocktail because they just wanted to have a glass in their hands. That’s when she started thinking about how to create a new drink and soon, she came up with one using cranberry juice instead of lime juice for a sweeter taste and visually more appealing to people.

Another theory goes by the belief that a NYC bartender, Toby Cecchini, invented this cosmopolitan cocktail in 1987. He tried and tasted Cook's creation, but didn’t love that version. So, he tried it with a small amount of lime juice to the mix and made a claim on this cocktail. Toby’s twist brought a sudden surge in the demand for the cocktail soon but the matter regarding this claim wasn’t resolved.

Finally, a bartender named Neal Murray claims that he created the well-known drink while working at a steakhouse in Minneapolis in 1975. After so many attempts made with the Kamikaze cocktail, he finally added a little cranberry juice to it. The name of the drink comes from the first person who tried it and mentioned, "how cosmopolitan!"

While all these are pretty common stories to know about cocktail drinks, here are some of the Cosmo variations. These are quick to make, saving time for any casual gathering or special event.

Exciting Cosmopolitan Variations

Blood Orange Cosmopolitan Cocktail

The blood orange cosmopolitan cocktail introduces a tangy twist. Combine 30 ml of citrus vodka, 15 ml of orange liqueur, 7.5 ml of lime juice, and 7.5 ml of blood orange juice. Add a splash of cranberry juice. Shake these ingredients with ice until chilled. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a blood orange slice. The blood orange juice enhances the citrus flavour.

Garnish with an orange twist. The pomegranate juice adds a tart element, enhancing the overall complexity of this variation.

2

The White Cosmopolitan Cocktail

This cocktail swaps traditional cranberry juice for white cranberry juice, giving it a lighter flavour. Mix 30 ml of vodka, 30 ml of Grand Marnier, 45 ml of white cranberry juice, and 15 ml of lime juice. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Its elegant look and subtle taste make it a favourite for refined occasions.

Cosmobellini

Ideal for brunch, the Cosmobellini is a blend of fruit and fizz. Combine 30 ml of citrus vodka, 15 ml of orange liqueur, 15 ml of lime juice, 15 ml of peach purée, and a splash of cranberry juice. Strawberry Cosmopolitan Cocktail

The strawberry cosmopolitan cocktail adds a fruity touch to the original. Shake 30 ml of vodka, 22.5 ml of strawberry liqueur, 30 ml of cranberry juice, and 15 ml of lime juice with ice. Strain into a chilled glass. The strawberry liqueur complements the tart cranberry, making this version both sweet and tangy.
