By: Ananya Mukherjee

Women’s Day

Every year, International Women’s Day becomes an occasion to celebrate women and their contributions in every field. Whether she is a family member, a colleague, a teacher or a homemaker, this is a day dedicated to celebrate her. One way to do this is by throwing an all-women brunch party for friends, family members, or colleagues. Women’s Day celebration with peers while having a plate of good food paired with cocktails and mocktails can be a good way of hosting a party. Here are some food and drink pairing suggestions that can help any host plan a great Women’s Day brunch.

European Food and Drink Pairings

The European or continental foods mentioned here are less spicy than their Indian food counterparts. Eggs benedict, pasta, etc., are some of the popular foods that pair well with cocktails, and here, the pairing of these foods with cocktails is discussed.

  1. Classic Eggs Benedict with Mimosa Cocktail

The classic eggs benedict comprises bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce, all served on an English muffin. Undoubtedly, this is a very savoury and a brunch-favourite dish around the world. On the other hand, the mimosa cocktail is bright and citrusy because of the presence of champagne and orange juice. This citrusy flavour cuts through the hollandaise sauce’s rich flavour. This helps in creating a balanced drink. The champagne’s bubbles and the effervescence complement the dish’s creamy texture.

  1. Pasta Arrabbiata with Espresso Martini Cocktail

Espresso martini cocktail, made with 30 ml vodka, 8 ml coffee liqueur, espresso and simple syrup, is often known to pair well with sweet foods. However, spicy pasta arrabbiata, is also a good food pairing option. This popular Italian pasta dish is cooked with spicy tomato sauce, garlic, red chilli flakes and olive oil. The heat and acidity of the food pair nicely with the rich flavours of the cocktail. At the same time, the bitterness of espresso is complemented with the spiciness of the pasta.

  1. Bruschetta and Cucumber Mint Cooler

Pairing bruschetta with a cucumber mint cooler makes for a fresh and well-balanced brunch combination. The crisp, garlicky bread topped with tomatoes and basil offers savoury flavors, while the cool, minty, and slightly sweet cucumber drink provides a light contrast. Together, they create a vibrant and perfect pairing for a brunch.

Indian Non-Vegetarian Food and Drink Pairings

Indian foods are usually spicy which is why some specific cocktails are required to cut through their taste. Here, Indian non-vegetarian food and best-paired drinks are mentioned.

  1. Egg Paratha with Whisky Sour Cocktail
  • Whisky- 30 ml
  • Lemon juice- 15 ml
  • Egg white - 1
  • Sugar syrup – 7 ml
  • Angostura bitters- 2 dashes

Egg paratha is made with flour stuffed with whisked eggs, onions, herbs and spices, and fried in oil or butter. This dish is delicious and buttery. The citrusy yet smoky notes of a classic whisky sour cocktail, made with 30 ml good quality whiskies like Johnnie Walker Blonde, can balance the richness of the egg paratha quite well.

  1. Mini Mutton Keema Uttapams with Gin and Tonic Cocktail

A classic breakfast and brunch dish from South India, specifically Tamil Nadu, uttapams are usually vegetarian and filling dishes. Made with a fermented rice batter and topped with spicy podi, herb-loaded mutton keema, this snack pairs well with the botanical notes of a classic gin and tonic cocktail made with 30 ml premium gins like Tanqueray No. 10.
