The origins of the Mint Julep remain shrouded in mystery, with various theories suggesting its roots. One prevalent notion suggests an Arab origin, where a similar concoction called Julab was crafted using rose petals. As the drink made its way to the Mediterranean, mint replaced the rose. Another theory suggests its creation around 1803 for medicinal purposes. However, it gained significant recognition in 1850, when Senator Henry Clay introduced it at the Round Robin Bar. Cementing its status, Mint Julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938, marking a tradition that persists today. Renowned for its refreshing appeal, Mint Julep has become a globally cherished and iconic cocktail.

The Julep traces its origins to European medicine, where a blend of sugar, herbs, spices, and spirits was common. As this concept reached the United States, it evolved into one of the first notable American cocktails. The spirit used varied by region, with early versions featuring brandy/cognac or rum, often without mint. Notably, it became the earliest cocktail served with ice, aligning with the emergence of ice houses. In the early days, ice was harvested from frozen lakes or sold in blocks, prompting bars to crush it using canvas bags and mallets for Juleps. This historical evolution contributed to the Julep's unique place in cocktail culture, blending medicinal roots with regional variations and innovation in ice usage.
