Whisky highball is a sought-after cocktail concoction popularised by bartenders and mixologists across continents. Whisky cocktails which have their origins in the American south and even in Scottish moors among other whisky-producing regions have also quickly become popular across Japanese high-end bars where the whisky highball served in tall glasses, topped with ice is a clear favourite.
A highball cocktail consists of two shots of premium liquor mixed with delectable non-alcoholic drinks which infuse the spirit with complex layers of flavour. Of the mixers used in the creation of whisky highball, the elderflower cordial is a wonderful floral liqueur poured over the spirit for a vibrant and cheery appeal.
Whisky and elderflower cordial is a delightful pairing because it offers to the discerning palate a robust and smoky flavour of the strong spirit underscored by the refreshing and slightly sweet notes of floral liqueur. Although elderflower cordial has a long history which can be traced back to the Roman ages, the liqueur has now resurfaced in modern mixology as an aromatic syrup with an irresistibly welcoming, flowery fragrance.
Elderflower cordial is made using the blossoms of the elder tree, or the Sambucus nigra, which blooms for a short time from the late spring to early summer. The tree itself grows in sunny locations across Europe and certain parts of Asia and Africa. Elderflowers, with their creamy hues and honey-scented notes are a delight to behold and are harvested to make cordial by soaking the elderflowers in a concentrated sugar syrup. Sometimes, a bit of lime juice is also added to the mix to add a citrusy zest to the liqueur.
While the elderflower drink can be consumed as a beverage in itself, added to whisky, it allows for a rather aromatic and fragrant take on a regular highball drink. To make a whisky and elderflower cordial cocktail, you can bring together a bit of premium Johnny Walker Red Label along with the liqueur and top it with some soda water. The carbonated drink nicely dilutes the strong fragrances of the elderflower cordial and the smoky notes of whisky to render a smooth drink that explodes as floral fireworks on the tongue.
You can use a tall highball glass to stir the drink and garnish it with a lemon twist or a thyme and mint sprig. Introducing the flavour and aroma of thyme into the drink can elevate its texture to make this a rather luxurious and indulgent cocktail, perfect for a special occasion.
