The old fashioned cocktail is widely regarded as one of the earliest known cocktail recipes, often traced back to the early 19th century. In lieu of this, the Ervin’s old fashioned retains the structure of the original drink but introduces a few precise elements that differentiate it. What began as a simple combination later came to define the very definition of a cocktail by the mid-1800s. Being served under the name ‘old fashioned’ to distinguish it from newer, more complex creations, the core technique remains stirring in this version which places emphasis on balanced dilution.
Place the brown sugar cube in a stirring glass and add the aromatic bitters.
Gently muddle the cube until it dissolves significantly.
Add the whisky and fill the glass with ice cubes.
Stir slowly to chill and dilute the drink.
Strain into a short tumbler over a large ice cube and garnish with an expressed orange peel.
