    Step 1

    Chill a coupe or martini cocktail glass by freezing it or filling and then discarding iced water.

    In a mixing glass, add the gin, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur and aromatic bitters.

    Toss ice cubes into the mixing glass and stir gently for 20-30 seconds until the fluid is thoroughly cold and diluted.

    Strain the drink into the chilled serving glass; express the oils from the lemon twist over the drink before adding as garnish and serve immediately.

Since gin is the primary spirit base, experiment with gins that have distinct but not overbearing botanical qualities. One with mild citrus, floral or even peppery aromas can provide surprising depth without competing with the maraschino.

Before adding ice and stirring, pour 1 ml of aromatic bitters into the empty mixing glass and swirl to coat the interior.  This can enable ‘priming’ the mixture with scent, allowing it to blend more fully into the final taste.
